Happy Holidays & All the Best in 2013 from Yalla Y'all!

Shaman and her Drum
Alfred Joseph Woolmer
As our second year comes to a close, I just wanted to wish every Yalla Y'all reader a Merry Christmas and/or whatever else you choose to celebrate, and a very happy New Year!

I started this web site to give back to a community that has given so much to me. I hope my work over the past year has helped you enjoy and appreciate the many gifts that are exchanged within the metro Atlanta raqs community year-round. Hundreds of dancers, teachers, choreographers, musicians, costumers, event producers, restaurant owners, costumers, photographers, and many others pour their hearts and souls into creating experiences for all of us.

Along with our personal goals, let's all resolve to get out and enjoy more of what our community has to offer in the coming year. I promise to do my best to keep you informed about all of it. Cheers!

The 2012 Belly Dance Community Survey

This year's survey is focused on workshops and performances... how you learn about them and how event producers can make them better.  We're also checking in once again on your level of participation in raqs events and what types of events you'd like to see more of in your community.

This survey is open to raqs enthusiasts everywhere, so please contribute and share!  It's completely anonymous and just 10 questions.  The survey will be open throughout the month of December, and results will be published in January.  Thank you in advance for your valuable input!

The survey is closed... thanks to all who participated!

Gearing Up for the 2012 Belly Dance Community Survey -- What Do YOU Want to Know?

Last year's belly dance student survey was fun and informative -- I hope it gave instructors, event producers, vendors and others who make some or all of their living from belly dance some valuable insights into how students were spending their time and money!

This year's survey is going to be a little more broad.  We'll check in for an update on some of the more interesting questions from last year's survey, but I also want to ask the community as a whole about what excites them, what inspires them, and -- again, when it comes right down to it -- how they choose to spend their time and money.  Classes, workshops, shows, competitions, costuming, DVDs, musical instruments... how do raqs enthusiasts choose between all the options we are fortunate to have available to us?

If you've got a specific question you'd like to ask the belly dance community, let me know!  The survey can only include so many questions, but I will try to address your suggestions.  Just add a comment on this post or send an e-mail to yallayall@comcast.net.  The survey will be conducted for about six weeks, beginning in mid-November.  Thanks in advance for your participation!

"Essence of Belly Dance 2" at AFBD

Aziza of Montreal
Coming up September 15 and 16, Atlanta Fusion Belly Dance gives local dancers an opportunity to study with two legendary performers:  Aziza of Montreal and Sera Solstice.  The "Essence of Belly Dance 2" weekend will include workshops, a gala show, a fashion show, and shopping.  It all takes place at the Westin Atlanta Perimeter North.

Sera Solstice
I learned about Aziza of Montreal years ago from the legendary Atlanta dancer Gina, who had studied with Aziza and saw her as a mentor and inspiration.  I was blown away by the first few videos I saw of Aziza performing, and I've been very excited to see her live!  Charlie and I will be photographing the show, and I can't wait to edit those photos.

New York-based Sera Solstice is a leading light in the East Coast Tribal community and a former member of Bellyqueen.  Sera will be teaching workshops using a deeply spiritual dance vocabulary centered around "Lunar" and "Solar" movements.

To learn more about this event, click hereClick here to buy tickets for the workshops and/or Saturday night's show.  To keep up with all the latest news and connect with other attendees, RSVP to the Facebook event.

I think this video of Aziza will make you want to buy a ticket immediately!

Veils in August!

One of the loveliest props we use in belly dance is the veil.  Silk veils, chiffon veils, fan veils, veil poi... rectangles, half-circles, multiple veils... spinning, wrapping, unwrapping... it's amazing how a piece of fabric can enhance a performance.  It's also amazing how easy it is to get tangled up in a veil mid-performance if you don't have your technique down (and sometimes even if you do).  We call it "When Veils Attack!"
Ziah of Awalim

This week, there are two new opportunities to polish up your veil skills and get a great workout too.

Starting this Thursday at 8:00 p.m., Ziah will start a six-week veil choreography course at Dance & Arts Showcase (near Mercer University).  Learn Awalim's dramatic choreography to Turku's "Aman Avci" during the Boot Camp class!  This choreography was developed as an upbeat opening number for Awalim's tour with Turku.  Click here to register!

This Saturday at Atlanta Fusion Belly Dance, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m., join Diana for a VeilRobics and Finger Cymbal WorkshopThe beauty and grace of belly dance meets the aerobic workout of dancing with a veil!  Learn how to get a great low-impact workout using this beautiful prop.  Plus Diana will share tips for improving your finger cymbal skills.  Bring a veil -- or if you need to borrow one, there will be some available.  Advance registration is just $30.  RSVP to the Facebook event for the latest news about this workshop.

As always, check the Yalla Y'all Calendar page for all the upcoming events in metro Atlanta and north Georgia!

Master Class with Amani Jabril this Saturday

Amani Jabril
If you're an experienced dancer and want to learn more about authentic contemporary Egyptian stylization, don't miss your chance to study with a local master of the art, Amani Jabril!

This Saturday from 10 to 12 at Atlanta Fusion Belly Dance, Amani offers "Egyptian Basics for the Advanced Dancer!
Technique & Combinations."  This class will focus on giving the advanced belly dancer insights into the techniques used by Egyptian dancers and creating that silky, yet powerful “Egyptian” styling.

Created from Amani’s own experience performing and studying Raqs Sharqi in the Middle East, the class will focus on detailed aspects of the movements – namely, posture and carriage, timing, footwork and that unique Egyptian use of muscular movement to power the dance.

This workshop is a follow-up to Amani's session in April -- if you attended that workshop, there's a $5 discount on the $35 price of admission to this weekend's class.  Pre-registration is required -- click here to reserve your spot!

This Weekend's Events -- It's All Happening in Athens!

Christy Fricks (Photo by PixieVision)

Enjoy dance and music workshops on Saturday at Floorspace Dance (in the very cool warehouse district):

3:15-5  Basket ATS with Jaki of Jahara

Single classes are $30, and all three workshops are $75

Saturday evening, GO Bar will host a dance show followed by live drumming beginning at 8 p.m. Performers will include Jahara Phoenix, Marcus, Christy Fricks, Sukari, Evadne, Sulukule, Stephanie Leslie & Co., Jenny Moss, Misty, Miss Mongoose, Sarah, and Mwanabahari!

Don't Miss the Crossroads & Origins Show!

Rina Orellana (photo rinaorellana.com)
Tickets are still available for what will be an amazing show on Saturday, July 14 in Avondale Estates!  The centerpiece of the Crossroads & Origins weekend intensive will feature performances by all three workshop instructors, as well as some of the most amazing talent from throughout the Southeast.

The show is at Academy Theater in downtown Avondale Estates.  Doors open at 7:00 and the show will start at 8:00.  Click here to get your advance tickets for just $20!

Don't miss your chance to see...

Rina Orellana
If you're a student, teacher, or performer of American Tribal Style®, I seriously expect to see your smiling face in the audience, because we'll have a rare chance to see original FatChance member Rina Orellana perform el baile flamenco.  Admit it -- one of the most awesome things about ATS is that you get to pretend you're a Flamencita during many of the slow moves!

Donna Mejia
Donna Mejia
If you've experienced Donna's workshops, lectures, and performances at TribalCon and other events, you'll know that any and all of the above can be a truly significant moment in your life.  To me, one of the most wonderful things about Donna is that her work as an educator has helped bring belly dance -- and tribal fusion in particular -- into the overall world of dance, and drive respect for the form throughout the dance community.  Oh, and her performance are electrifying!

Lee Ali
A legend of both 1970s and contemporary belly dance who has been performing since her teens, Lee Ali is a unique performer, teacher, musician, lecturer, and community leader who rarely visits our area.  She is an expert in Greek, North African, and trance forms, as well as classic raqs sharqi.  I hear that Lee will present a classic 1970s raqs routine, taking us back to the golden era of the Middle Eastern clubs that had their epicenter in North Beach.

Lee Ali

In addition to these amazing performers, the Crossroads & Origins show will feature some of the most talented dancers from metro Atlanta and throughout the Southeast, including:
  • Awalim Dance Company
  • Banat Almeh (my troupe!)
  • Christy Anandaconda
  • Halleyah
  • Jahara Phoenix Dance Company
  • Jenny Nichols & Holley Avey
  • Maria Palacio (Charlotte, NC)
  • Natalie Brown of Delirium Tribal & Alternacirque (Columbia, SC)
  • Rafiah Dance Company of Atlanta Fusion Belly Dance
  • Teejei Brigham, formerly of Awalim and now teaching and performing in Asheville, NC
See you there!

Raqs Atlanta Anniversary Party & Show This Thursday

Before there was Yalla Y'all, there was a Yahoo! group called Raqs Atlanta. Run by Andye-Andinha Niakan with the help of some friends, Raqs Atlanta is the original source for news and educated opinion about not just belly dance (or whatever you choose to call it), but the metro Atlanta international community as a whole.  Whether it's an annual Persian festival, a South Asian wedding expo and fashion show, a workshop with a world-renowned dance instructor, or a local student showcase, you can often find out about it beforehand at Raqs Atlanta and sometimes even read Andye's informed review of the event after the fact.

This coming Thursday, June 28, metro Atlanta's belly dance community will celebrate the 14th anniversary of Raqs Atlanta and pay tribute to Andye's years of dedication at the Raqs Atlanta Anniversary Party.  The party will be at Tongue & Groove (click for location info) and is schedule to start at 9:00.  Featuring performances by some of the top local talent, this will be an event to remember!

I will have the honor of introducing three of the performers and sharing some of Andye's most memorable experiences from the past 14 years.  Visit the Facebook event or event web site for more information and to request your invitation.  It's free if you're on the guest list.  I hope to see you there!

This event comes at an interesting time for Yalla Y'all.  There's been some vigorous online dialogue this week about best practices for event scheduling, and in particular the best sources of information on upcoming shows and workshops.  I'm honored that this site is now widely considered a compliment to Raqs Atlanta and a leading source of information for the community -- that was my goal, and I believe I've achieved it!  I feel that the conversation that's going on right now will help bring the community together and result in more success for anyone planning an event.  So if you're new to Yalla Y'all, welcome -- and please come back often for a complete calendar of upcoming workshops and shows in metro Atlanta and north Georgia!

Lacy says, "You don't have to know ATS to enjoy watching its magic unfold or dance to the beat of the drums in whatever style moves you. Just come enjoy the vibe! No performances, just a good old-fashioned drum circle & dancing."

The drum circle will be led by master percussionist Danny Stern, and if you haven't seen and heard Danny perform you're in for a treat.  Bring your drum, your finger cymbals, and your fluffy skirts and get ready for an epic ATS throwdown!

Just $5 at the door. Bottled water and snacks will be available for purchase.  Located at Atlanta Fusion Belly Dance, near Ikea & Atlantic Station. RSVP to the Facebook event for more info!

Summer Workshop Preview

The next few weeks will be pretty quiet in the metro Atlanta belly dance world... but there are a few workshops with very prominent dancers coming up this summer!

June 21-24
This is it!  ATS® General Skills Certification & Teacher Training with Carolena Nericcio and Megha Gavin, right here in Atlanta! And if you aren't already registered for the workshops, you'll just have to bask in the knowledge that these ladies are actually within driving distance of wherever you are.

However, mere mortals are invited to a Tribal Dance & Drum Jam Thursday night at Atlanta Fusion Belly Dance.  A drum circle led by the uber-talented Danny Stern will provide the backdrop for whatever kind of dancing you want to do (and you know there will be some ATS throwdowns)!  Admission is just $5.  Personally, I can't wait to put on my dancing shoes for this one!

The workshops will take place at Atlanta Fusion Belly Dance, and the whole thing is presented by Lacy Perry and Beledi Boutique.  General Skills is sold out, but passes are still available for Teacher Training.

Donna Mejia

July 13-15
I heard today that there are only eight spots left for Crossroads & Origins, featuring Donna Mejia, Rina Orellana Rall, and Lee Ali and brought to us by Ziah and the Awalim Dance Company.

Only 35 people will be attending this intensive session with three master fusion artists at Academy Theater in Avondale Estates.  There will also be a show on Saturday night that is sure to be amazing, featuring Donna's uniquely powerful style (which often includes hip-hop influences, as well as elements of West African dance); classic Flamenco from Rina, who is a founding member of FatChance Belly Dance; and a taste of Lee Ali's signature North African or trance styles, of which she is an acknowledged master.  Lee has been performing since she was in her teens, and has done a wonderful job of encouraging dialogue throughout the community.

This event will be focused on belly dance fusion -- not Tribal Fusion, but dance forms that any belly dancer can use. The instructors are all dancers who fully pursue both belly dance and other dance forms, not just belly dance fusion artists who add accents into their dance. All three artists will be conducting discussions along with movement classes.  Visit the event web site or the Facebook event to learn more!

This Weekend's Big Event: The Dancer's Intensive

Amani Jabril
The key thing going on in metro Atlanta's belly dance community this weekend is an event brought to us by the fabulous Amani Jabril called "The Dancer's Intensive: Crafting the Art of Dance."

Amani will be joined by former Bellydance Superstar Yasmine of Charlotte and Kitiera of Seattle in bringing instruction, performances, and discussions to several locations in the Roswell area.

This is the first of several Dancer’s Intensive events Amani plans to produce.  The goal of this event is to focus on crafting the art of dance by connecting with the body, the rhythm, and the people.  The weekend will include a series of intermediate/advanced-level movement workshops, two lunchtime discussions led by Amani, a welcome hafla Friday night, and a gala show Saturday night.

It's not too late to get involved!  Click here to learn more.
