Metro Atlanta's Northside Tribe and Canton, North Carolina's Browncoat Bellydance are troupes leading the way in creating performances based on their favorite movies, TV shows, and comic books. The latest example is coming to Global Dance in July, as Signal Entertainment and Spectacle & Mirth have teamed up to bring you a theatrical dance and performance arts tribute to "Game of Thrones." "FANTASM" brings to life the adventures of Sinbad the Sailor as told by Scheherazade in European versions of "One Thousand and One Nights" and features an original score by audiomachine’s head composer Paul Dinletir. If you saw the "Alice in Wonderland" production in 2014, you know that these shows feature amazing costumes, staging, music, and special effects... along with fabulous choreographies in many raqs styles!

Georgia Salimpour Collective presents another in a series of opportunities to dive deep into the cultural and artistic history of belly dance. This event will feature a lecture and performances focused on Turkish styles of belly dance (personal note: we just don't get enough of that around here!).

Local artist Aya of Istanbul, a native of Turkey (personal note: my original dance mama, yip!) will share her wealth of knowledge in Turkish dance, music, and culture. You'll also see that information brought to live in performances by Karma Karmelita, Yara Sultan of Savannah's Magic Carpet Dance Studio, and of course Aya herself.

Shimmy Mob/World Bellydance Day

Now in its seventh year, Shimmy Mob brings together belly dancers all over the world to learn and perform a choreography (fun fact: this year's choreography was created by former Atlanta star Gina) in "flash mob" style in their local communities. Proceeds benefit local charities devoted to supporting victims of domestic abuse.

This year's Georgia Shimmy Mob teams and performances include:

One of the Southeast's premiere events returns in a new home and a little later in the year! Brought to us by Ziah of Awalim and the Tribal Bellydance Center of Atlanta, this year's TribalCon once again features dance, music, and lectures, as well as gala shows and epic parties Friday and Saturday night with live music.

The Friday and Saturday night shows feature a plethora of local, regional, and national talent, in addition to the instructors from the dance, music, and lecture tracks. Friday's show will be followed by a party with a funky prom theme (wear the best - or worst - prom dress you can find at the thrift store); Saturday's party will be all about SPARKLE (check this video for reference).
