March Preview

March comes in like a lion with a visit from the legendary Karim Nagi, plus fabulous guest performers at Tribal Cafe and a great new opportunity to learn about classical Arabic music (while drinking wine and eating baklava). Get out and support your metro Atlanta raqs community!

Workshops & Hafla with Karim Nagi

Global dance brings Egyptian musician, dancer, and teacher Karim Nagi to metro Atlanta for a series of workshops and a hafla. Classes include:
  • Friday 7-9 p.m.: Cymbalism (Finger Cymbals with Movement)
  • Saturday 10-noon: Live Drum Solo for Dancers
  • Saturday 2-4 p.m.: Arab Folk Dance Intensive
  • Sunday 10-12: Musicality for Dancers

Atlanta Tribal Cafe (Evening Edition)

$8 in advance/$10 at the door (exact change appreciated, and bring tips for the dancers!) 

At this month's evening Tribal Cafe, you can enjoy performances from three riveting fusion artists: Alyssum Pohl, Teejei Brigham, and Sara Hassan.

Tribal Cafe is a monthly event hosted by Babylon Cafe. The authentic, made-from-scratch Iraqi food is tasty, the atmosphere is casual, and it's a great opportunity for local and regional tribal-style performers to engage with the audience (and get paid)!

Ya Leil Ya Leil: A Night at the Cabaret

The Georgia Salimpour Collective brings us the first of several events focused on Arabic music and belly dance history. This event will focus on the kings and queens of Arabic music, including Mohammed Abdel Wahab, Um Kalthoum, Farid al-Atrache, and Abdel Halim Hafez.

The event will kick off with a brief lecture; after that, four of metro Atlanta's most talented performers -- Aziza Nawal, Samora, Diane Adams, and Beatrice Walker -- will bring this music to life. Wine and dessert will also be provided! Check out the Facebook event for more details.
