May Preview

Costuming Workshop: "Fluffles"

What's a Fluffle? It's a fluffy, ruffly, versatile costume accessory that can be a vest, a shrug, a Ghawazee-style hip ruffle, and more. Learn to make one with Ziah! This month's evening Tribal Cafe will feature performances from Indian dance troupe Moksha, Birmingham-based fusion artist Lauryn Gallagher of Ultra Hip Revue, and Atlanta's own Lotus SEEDs. This monthly event will be moving to Taverna Plaka in June.

Shimmy Mob/World Bellydance Day

Throughout the day at locations around metro Atlanta/Athens/Augusta

Now in its seventh year, Shimmy Mob brings together belly dancers all over the world to learn and perform a choreography (fun fact: this year's choreography was created by former Atlanta star Gina) in "flash mob" style in their local communities. Proceeds benefit local charities devoted to supporting victims of domestic abuse.

This year's Georgia Shimmy Mob teams and performances include:

  • Athens (led by Rajni of Qamar; performances at Athens Farmers' Market, Civic Center, and UGA Arch, beginning at 10:00 a.m.)
  • Atlanta ITP (led by Nazeem Allayl; schedule and locations TBD)  
  • Atlanta OTP (led by Global Dance; schedule and locations TBD)
  • Augusta (performing at Market on the River at 10:00 a.m.)
  • Decatur (led by Beth Crompton; schedule and locations TBD)

Zills and Thrills Workshop with Saroya

2:30 - 4:30 p.m.

Atlanta favorite Saroya returns from her new home in Panama for a workshop featuring combinations accompanied by finger cymbals. This event is brought to us by the Decatur Shimmy Mob group, and all proceeds will be donated to an organization committed to ending domestic violence. Summer Mini-Shops with Majda: "Shimmy Stamina"

$50 per workshop or $120 for series of three

This summer, Majda brings her considerable skills and knowledge to us in three workshops at the Tribal Bellydance Center of Atlanta. In the first of these, "Shimmy Stamina," she'll teach drills that will help you develop and maintain a strong, even shimmy while adding layers and footwork.
