Friday 3/9: March is coming in like a lion with the Bellydance Superstars Club Bellydance tour, featuring some of the best local performers as well as the ladies we all love, including Moria and (recently announced) Petite Jamilla. I happen to know that Awalim is working on something that will knock your socks off!

Saturday 3/10: Moria Chappell sticks around after Friday night's show for a Fusion Fundamentals workshop at Atlanta Fusion Belly Dance, presented by Awalim Dance Company.

Sunday 3/18: Atlanta Fusion Belly Dance presents its semi-annual "AFBD's Got Talent" student showcase at Nicola's. Check out some of AFBD's established and upcoming stars, and enjoy the fabulous food and hospitality you can only get from Nicola!

Les Raissat Belly Dance Makes Its Debut

Two of metro Atlanta's rising Raqs stars, Isis and Saniyah, have partnered up to form Les Raissat Belly Dance, a duo available for performances, workshops, and classes. Check out their new web site!

Isis, most recently a member of the Bahiraat dance troupe, has been teaching at Amoora Studios for the past few months. She has been studying the art form since 2003. Saniyah, also a former Bahiraat member, has been studying and performing since 2006.

Together, these talented ladies are prepared to make a splash in the local raqs community! Keep an eye out for them at upcoming shows and events... and best wishes to them as they start this new venture!

Survey Results, Part 4!

Here's the final installment of the results of the Great 2011 Belly Dance Student Survey.

First off, I want to offer my sincere thanks to the 89 respondents who participated! I hope the experience of completing the survey was and enjoyable and rewarding (if minor) part of your experience as a belly dancer. The next survey will be even better -- please participate again!

I hope the results are helpful to teachers, event producers, and others who care about this beautiful community. My goal with this blog is to help everyone succeed and help the community thrive by keeping everyone informed and bridging gaps.

Below are responses to the open-ended last question on the survey, where respondents were invited to share any thoughts or suggestions. Think of this as an online focus group, where students and community members engage in open discussion about what they want, what they need, and what they don't like. I've edited some of these a little, but this is the voice of the community!

Community

Most community-related comments were critiques of what respondents perceived as a lack of inclusiveness in the belly dance world, and a desire to have a more closely united community. Hey, that's what this blog is all about! What are you doing to bring the community together -- whether it's your own group of students and supporters or the larger belly dance subculture in your area?

“I just wantto say that this is a great idea. I hope that all in the community will takethese comments and suggestions under consideration. I would love to see thecommunity as a whole performing together; like Shimmy Mob and the Little FivePoints Halloween Parade. When we (the community) come together across stylelines, and forms, it creates unity and strength within this art that we lovesooo much!!"

Instruction

Some of the responses in the quantitative part of the survey are reflected in respondents' comments about the kinds of classes they would like to be able to take.

Teachers

Some respondents offered strong critiques of teacher behavior and qualifications.

“A teacherneeds to remember that your potential client base is large...your troupe(s)and your students are ALL clients. Howyou treat these clients can determine how your business grows... put your egoaside.”
"I wanta class/troupe to progress with and perform with. I have tried a few teachers,but though they may be very active and very supportive in the community, I don'think the one had enough experience to actually be teaching and the othertiming was bad for me.”
“Teachers inthe area need to stop teaching and take more classes. If you want to teach,mentor with a seasoned teacher first.”
“My teacherdoesn't actively discourage taking classes in other styles...but she doesn'texactly approve of it either. I really feel like I have to be loyal to herstyle or I'm not part of the ‘in crowd.’ If I ever want to be in the troupe …I have tojoin a personality cult. I'm not sure if this is normal or not.”

PerformanceOpportunities

As indicated by the survey, students would like more casual performance opportunities. Watch the Calendar page for events like the "Open Stage" series produced by Kira in 2011, drum circles, and other events that are open to casual performances and/or social dancing.

Bellydance by Samora Show at Nicola's Tonight!

This show has been on the calendar for a while, but I'm really late in featuring it in a post! Tonight at Nicola's Lebanese Restaurant, Bellydance by Samora will present its Post-Holiday Extravaganza! This event will feature performances by Samora, Amoraat Dance Ensemble, Samora's students, and special guests Âya of Istanbul and Suzanne! This is a chance to see some really talented performers and enjoy the warm, family-friendly atmosphere of Nicola's.

The show will will start promptly at 6:30. You don't need to buy a ticket, but you will need to purchase dinner. Please call the restaurant at: (404) 325-2524 for reservations, and plan to arrive well before 6:30 so you can order dinner and be comfortable when the show starts (dinner service will begin at 5:00). Survey Results, Part 3!

Welcome to the penultimate post summarizing the results of the 2011 Great Bellydance Student Survey!

What do students want more of? Less of?

We revisited our master list of belly dance activities and asked respondents to let us know what they'd like to see more of... where they might be oversaturated... and where the availability of each activity in their area is about right for their needs.

What do students want more of? The top three responses were one-day workshops, academic lectures (with 55 respondents saying they want more), and costuming/sewing instruction. Students are also interested in more makeup and hair tips, as well as music classes, concerts, and haflas.

Few respondents indicated "enough already!" on any activity. A few felt that we don't need more bellydance fitness classes, choreography classes, or restaurant performances -- but most felt that the availability of all these is "just right."

The implications for teachers and event producers are obvious on this one. Students are clearly hungry to learn more about the culture and music behind this art form, and to have more opportunities to listen to music and get together for more casual social events. And there's a big opportunity for teachers to share their costuming, sewing, hair styling, and performance makeup skills, whether in standalone workshops or as part of a weekend workshop.

What are students' goals for 2012?

In the interest of helping teachers support their students in and out of the class setting, we asked respondents for their belly dance-related goals in the coming year. Many of the most popular goals are closely linked to the topic we just covered -- learning more about culture, history, music, and costuming. But the top three goals were to practice more, perform more frequently, and attend more workshops. In addition, 39% are interested in trying a new style.

Again, the implications for teachers and event producers are fairly obvious. Providing performance opportunities is key to attracting and retaining students. But how can teachers help students with the most popular goal -- "practice more?" Every student knows that practicing between classes is essential in getting the most out of the class and growing as a dance. And most teachers can tell which students have been practicing. So why is it hard for students to make time for practice? Perhaps teachers could offer regular tips on how, what, when, and where to practice, so it's not so intimidating. Encouragement via e-mail or other online communications between classes might also be appreciated. And performances always drive practice -- so as performance opportunities increase, practice should also increase.

Why do students love belly dance?

Really just for fun -- but also because it may spark some ideas for teachers and event producers -- we asked respondents what it is they love most about this art form. Not surprisingly, what keeps most students engaged is the outlet for creative or artistic expression that belly dance provides. Many also said they love entertaining people. And quite a few mentioned the bonds and feeling of sisterhood that they feel with other enthusiasts.

Several respondents offered verbatim responses to the effect of "all of the above!" And one simply said "This is who I am."

Alicia is Coming This Weekend!

This weekend, Alicia of BellyCraft is in town for workshops and a show brought to us by World Belly Dance Alliance. Hailing from south Florida, Alicia is a second-generation belly dancer who has become fluent in the darker side of tribal fusion.

Alicia will bring her skills to Pera this weekend with a series of workshops, and she'll be performing in a show Saturday night that is shaping up to be a big event for the metro Atlanta community! Classes with Amani Jabril in Alpharetta/Roswell

It's difficult to announce every new class session here on Yalla Y'all. However, periodically we will feature information about various instructors around town.

Based on the results of our recent survey, a fair number of local students are interested in learning more about Lebanese-style belly dance. Amani Jabril is currently building a Lebanese-style class... if you are interested in attending, please contact her!

If you've seen Amani perform, you know that she captures the earthiness and sensuality of this art form oh-so-beautifully (she will be performing in this Saturday's Alicia workshop show at Pera). As both a working anthropologist and a professional dancer, Amani offers a practical, street-smart view of not only the technical aspects of music and movement, but also the culture and the motives from which the dance as cultural expression is created.

Taken from her own experiences in the field in Egypt, Lebanon and the U.A.E., in addition to ex-pat groups in the United States, Amani's classes include favored combinations as seen on the contemporary dance scene as well as movement from her own signature style.

Best of Bellydance Competition This Saturday at Pera Dance

Just a reminder that this Saturday, Pera Dance will be hosting a belly dance competition called "The Best of Bellydance." Doors open at 6:30 and the contest begins at 7:00.

I haven't heard a whole lot of chatter about who will be judging, but I would expect to see some of Atlanta's most discerning performers and community members at the judges' table. Tickets for watching the show are just $12 at the door. Click here for more info!

Activities & Participation

We wanted to find out what belly dance-related activities are students participating in, and how often. Not surprisingly, most respondents attend some sort of class on a weekly basis, with 67% taking technique classes, 63% participating in choreography classes, and 41% enjoying belly dance fitness classes at least once a week. (Interestingly, there was a percentage of respondents who rarely or never take classes.) Watching and learning from videos is also a popular activity.

Attendance at performances of various types was a less frequent activity for most respondents. Most attend studio shows and workshop shows only a few times a year. Which brings us to a question that gets discussed constantly in this community... what can event producers do to drive attendance at performances? So much work goes into putting on a show -- the producers, the performers, and the teachers and troupe members preparing for student performances put in hours of practice and spend lots of money on costumes. It's always a shame to see a small audience at an event. As a marketing person, I would strongly encourage event producers to leverage every tool at their disposal to get the word out about the show and "sell" the most interesting elements of it. Here are some tips based on what I have noticed over the years:

Be careful about when you schedule an event. Check my Calendar page, for starters! Be sure it's not competing with other big events (belly dance-related or not).
Think about the location. I went to several great shows last year that were well outside I-285 and well worth the drive -- but not very well-attended.
Team up with other studios. There's a lot of "coopetition" in the belly dance community, and even if you're competing for the same student base, everyone can win if you work together.
Marketing, marketing, marketing. Use Facebook, Twitter, posters, e-mails -- get the word out to everyone as far in advance of the show as possible. Creating a Facebook event is a must. Consider using Facebook pay-per-click ads -- they can be very targeted (e.g., users in a particular metro area who are interested in belly dance). You only pay if someone clicks through, but if they don't, they'll see your copy and image for free! Have a landing page on your web site that is informative and compelling.
A big part of marketing is not just the tactics, but the content. These tips seen very simple, but remember that you don't have much time to capture someone's interest. If your information is confusing, incomplete, inaccurate -- or appears less than professional -- you may lose their interest right away. Be sure your messaging is clear, complete, and accurate. Check the details like spelling and dates before you publish your communications. Use professional-quality photographs whenever you can (with credit to the photographer where it's needed). Get the details right the first time so you don't have to try to re-educate your audience if you make a mistake. And really think about what it is about your event that is going to make people want to see it. Any special guest performers? Is it a fundraiser for a good cause? Live music? Emphasize the differentiators!

Changes in Frequency

One of the most surprising results of this survey was the response to the question (referencing the above activities), "Overall, in the past year, have you been participating in these activities more, less, or about the same as the previous year?" With the obvious declines in class and event attendance that most teachers and event producers have been experiencing, we would expect that a majority of respondents would answer "less." However, only 28% of respondents said "less." A strong majority, 73%, said they are participating more or at about the same frequency as in 2010.

So what does this mean? The metro Atlanta market is fairly saturated with options for belly dance classes and events. Our Links page lists a whopping 40 instructors and studios, most of whom were actively offering classes and private instruction in 2011. Several new studios have opened in the past few years, and several new teachers have entered the scene. My hypothesis is that the belly dance student population is not growing substantially, but the growing number of options is diluting the market. New studios in new locations may be drawing business from more established studios. The good news is that belly dance enthusiasts continue to participate in classes and events.

A Closer Look at Students Who Are Participating Less

We asked those respondents who said they spent less time on belly dance activities in 2011 to list the reasons for this decline. Not surprisingly, most said that financial issues kept them from being more involved. Many also indicated that they were just too busy. Some respondents from areas outside metro Atlanta and the outlying suburbs expressed frustration at the lack of options in the area where they live.

The open-ended responses to this question shed some light on specific challenges students are facing. These included...

I need a class that is after 7:30 p.m. on any weeknight
I had a few years of much lighter bellydance activities in the past... due to now ex-husband's disapproval, and also smaller children commitments
There are NO opportunities in my area, other than one... which is not my chosen style
Most of the activities listed do not exist in my area at all!
I feel like the options I have are not the best fit for me
Haven't found a teacher that fits what I am looking for
Have been incorporating Belly Dance into my new primary style of Burlesque
Wanting to expand away from my belly dance life
Divorce (going through one now)

Survey Results, Part 1!

Welcome to the first installment of the results of the 2011 Bellydance Student Survey! We had a total of 89 respondents, and their input provides some great directional input for instructors and event producers on the state of the belly dance "consumer" market.

I wanted to do this survey because I've heard so many questions and hypotheses about what students and even attendees want, and why class, workshop, and performance attendance seems to have declined. Everyone is well aware that many people are out of work or working longer hours to get by in the current economy.

So what can those who produce products and services for the belly dance community offer to attract and retain more business? My day job is in marketing, and the best marketing is always based on an understanding of what the market really wants (and most importantly, what they will pay for). Many companies can't afford to do the kind of research that will give them these insights. My goal was to combine my marketing capabilities with my access to the belly dance community and begin to provide some insights that will make the community stronger by making the "producers" more successful and get the "consumers" more involved.

I'll be sharing the insights from the survey in several installments. The first will focus on the profile of the respondents and the styles of dance in which they either currently participate or would like to try. Please feel free to ask any questions about the results.

Finally, I want to thank everyone who responded to the survey for their honest and thoughtful input. And thanks to the people who got involved and shared this survey, especially the teachers who encouraged their students to participate!

Respondent Profile

Location

This survey was intended to focus on the area served by Yalla Y'all, which includes metro Atlanta and north Georgia, though it was open to respondents in any location. Most respondents (68%) were from the metro Atlanta region, though the remainder of the state was well-represented, and 15 of the 89 total respondents live outside the state of Georgia. All but two were from the Southeast, including North Carolina (4), Tennessee (2), Alabama (2), Florida, and Texas.

You'll find that some responses have specific meaning in the metro Atlanta area, but many of the insights from this survey are likely to be widely applicable.

Dominant Style

In listing the dance style they primarily study and perform, respondents were split pretty evenly between what most of us classify as "cabaret" and "tribal" styles. About 40% identified themselves as primarily Tribal Fusion or ATS dancers, and American Cabaret, Classical Egyptian, and Egyptian Pop styles total about 36%. Several other dancers identified themselves as primary folkloric, theatrical,or Turkish Romany performers.

I'm pleased that the survey includes a healthy mix of styles, with respondents representing many facets of our diverse community.

Troupe/Studio Affiliation

We were curious to learn how many respondents consider themselves connected to a studio, teacher, or troupe. Over half of respondents indicate that they have such a connection, while the other 45% study with multiple teachers, consider themselves "free agents," or are not sure how to label themselves.

What are the implications for teachers? Almost every teacher's goal is to build long-term relationships and loyalty among students; it's possible that up to 30% of the student market may be seeking a teacher, studio, or troupe as their belly dance "home."

Interest in Dance Styles

What styles do students want to learn more about?

Responses to this question may give teachers and event producers some ideas for new classes and workshops. Almost 30% of respondents would like to learn more about Bollywood-style dance. Persian dance also seems to be enjoying a surge in interest, with 25% of respondents interested in trying it. Classes or workshops in Turkish Romany and Greek dance may also attract students, as well as ATS, Classical Egyptian, and folkloric styles in general. Overall, there was not a single style listed that did not generate some interest.

What styles did we leave off the list?

Several students identified themselves as students or performers of styles not listed in the survey, including Gothic (5), African (2), Debke, Tunisian, other Romany styles, Modern Fusion, Bhangra, historical reconstruction dances, other group improv styles, Balkan dance, and international folk dance.

Big news! First, did you know that the new Bellydance Superstars tour, "Club Bellydance," will be making a stop in Atlanta on Friday, March 9? Sabah (famous for her ballet fusion), Lauren, Atlanta's own Moria, Stefanya, and Sabrina will be featured in this performance at Oglethorpe University's Lupton Auditorium. With a smaller cast and smaller venues, the new show is designed to give the BDSS dancers an opportunity to try out new ideas and choreographies not possible in the full theater show.

And the big news is that in each city, performers from the local bellydance community will provide the first half of the show! So far, we know that Awalim Dance Company will be sharing the stage with the superstars... other local performers will be announced. Tickets are on sale now!

Along with the show, Ziah and Awalim will be sponsoring Moria Chappell in a "Fusion Fundamentals" workshop on Saturday, March 10 at Atlanta Fusion Belly Dance. Just announced -- a unique opportunity to learn the exciting art of Raqs al Assaya from a true master of the art!

On December 5th and 12th, Majda Anwar will be teaching a special session at Dance 101 focused on the various ways in which a cane can be used to accent your belly dance performances. These sessions will be appropriate for all skill levels, and can be taken together or separately.

Majda will dive into technique that includes the Egyptian folkloric martial art Tahtib, Reda-influenced combinations, and an exploration of the modern American Tribal Style moves (for example, the Reach & Sit) that are based on traditional cane work.

"The Best of Bellydance 2011" Competition at Pera Dance

On January 7 (please note the change from the original date of December 10), Pera Dance will play host to a rare treat in the metro Atlanta belly dance community: a belly dance competition! I personally can't think of a similar event in recent memory. There will be a grand prize of $200, plus gifts for the runners-up. Doors open at 6:30, and the show starts at 7:00.

Performers of all belly dance styles and skill levels are welcome -- men as well as women. In addition to their skills and ability, contestants will be judged on their costume choice and, importantly, cultural representation -- the dancer's ability to convey to the audience what genre he or she represents. For fusion performances, the performer will be evaluated on how clearly the styles being fused are represented. So performers will need to be sure they do their homework!

ATS in the ATL... ITP!

If you understand the title of this post, you are exactly the kind of person who needs to know about the new ATS session with Ziah of Awalim in Oakhurst on Wednesday nights, beginning November 30th!

With Teejei now living in Knoxville, there's been a gap in the availability of American Tribal Style instruction inside the Perimeter (aka ITP). Ziah will be testing the waters with a three-week mini-session on Wednesday nights at Barefoot n Motion Dance Academy in Oakhurst. If the response is good enough, ATS classes will continue on Wednesday nights, and students will have opportunities to perform!

Ziah will offer two classes each Wednesday during this three-week intensive:
7:30-8:30pm Improvisational Choreography/ATS Foundations
8:30-9:30pm Improvisational Choreography/ATS Working in Groups (for dancers with more ATS experience... though adventurous beginners will want to give it a try, since group formations are a critical part of the dance form)

Saturday, November 12, the one and only Madame Onca of the Mezmer Society will be in town for the Mechanical Masquerade, a Steampunk event now in its second year. Prior to the big party Saturday night, Onca will be teaching two workshops: a tahtib class called "Raqs Vaudevillia: Love the Big Stick" at 2:00, and an introduction to Tarot reading (yes, the woman has many skills) at 3:30.

Saturday night, the Tuareg band Tinariwen -- familiar to many Tribal dancers -- will be playing at the Variety Playhouse in Little Five Points. Click here to purchase tickets!

Sunday, November 13, there's a newly-announced workshop from 12:30 to 2:30 at Pera Dance called "Najm al Cairo," featuring Aleya. I've had a busy couple of weeks, so I've been focusing on keeping the calendar up to date, but haven't had much time for posts. Here are some of the more exciting things going on in the community right now...

Amani Jabril is in Lebanon, teaching and performing in the Amani Oriental Festival in Beirut. Though the festival is named for the Lebanese dancer Amani, we know our Amani will raq their socks off over there!
This weekend, Beats Antique will be playing in Athens as part of the Wild Rumpus Halloween Bash at the Georgia Theater. In the workshop I took with Zoe a few weeks ago, she said she's really excited about this show because "It's a giant Halloween party!" There's also a Wild Rumpus street party and parade... obviously, lots of fun to be had in Athens this Saturday night!
New classes are popping up all over, including several "Belly Dance Cardio" classes (do I sense a trend?). You can focus on fitness while working on your shimmies with Kumari on Sundays at 1:00 p.m. at Dance 101, with Oracle at LA Fitness and other locations (see the Jahara Phoenix site for details), and with Lacy Perry or Isis at Amoora Dance & Fitness.

New Classes with Majda at Dance 101

In case you haven't heard, the one and only Majda Anwar of Awalim is now teaching at Dance 101! Teejei paved the way for tribal belly dance at this studio, and Majda has taken the reins with two classes every Monday night. Majda has been teaching at Georgia Tech for several years, but now everyone can have the privilege of studying with one of metro Atlanta's true "raqs stars!"

At 7:00, it's Discover Belly Dance. Dance 101's structure includes a variety of "Discover," or beginner classes. Majda's contribution will introduce students to the fundamentals of the form. Then at 8:00, more experiences students can experience Majda's new "Killer Drills" class. This class includes conditioning, then a series of traveling drills with layered movement, plus finger cymbals in various rhythms. Majda's goal is to challenge dancers to discover new things about how their bodies work and devote attention to the muscularity and body mechanics that make movement more efficient and allow for easier layering. Students are encouraged to work at their own pace and modify the movements as needed, while also stretching their capabilities.

How to Be a Good Belly Dance Student

I've been a student of belly dance for seven and a half years, with at least half a dozen teachers. I've been very closely tied to several of them. I've been in a student troupe, I've switched styles and felt like I was starting from scratch, and I've "broken up" with teachers. So if you're a beginning or casual student, here's what I've learned about being a good student and getting the most of out the investment you make in classes.

Don't be afraid to talk and ask questions. If you've been in classes with me, you know that I probably do this to a fault. But here are a few reasons to speak up in class (though not to the point of being disruptive, of course -- you will quickly get a read from your teacher on how much she likes to chat): first, there is knowledge to be gained by the whole class that your teachers may only share in response to questions. If you ask for something to be broken down in more detail or more slowly, chances are very good that someone else in the class was hoping someone would ask. Second -- especially when it comes to music, culture, and history -- if you test out your knowledge with a question you will sometimes find out that you're wrong, but at least you'll learn. Finally, in case you haven't noticed yet, belly dancers are often very bright and witty, and you can get into the most hilarious, entertaining conversations you've ever had in a belly dance class or troupe practice session. But again... try not to be disruptive. Be respectful.
Support your teacher. Be loyal to her (or him). If you believe in what she's doing (and if you don't why are you in her class?), help her build her business. Being a professional dancer and teacher is hard, especially with the economy in its current state. If your teacher asks for someone to hand out flyers, work the door at a show, share an event on Facebook, sell raffle tickets -- whatever -- you should help. You will grow closer to your teacher, learn more about the business of belly dance, and help keep the very classes you are attending continuing and, with any luck, growing.
Go out and see belly dancers performing. I can't stress the importance of this to beginner students enough. I'll never forget the first time I went to Nicola's, after I'd only been a student for a few months. As soon as one of my teachers came out to perform, everything clicked -- this was what I was learning to do! There is a healthy belly dance scene in Atlanta, whether you buy tickets for a show or just go out to Nicola's, Taverna Plaka, Messina's, Fanoos, Cafe Istanbul, or one of the many other local venues where dancers perform. I highly recommend Nicola's on the weekends; it's a casual, friendly atmosphere, the food is tasty and inexpensive, and you get to watch Nicola dance as well! Another reason to go out is to get a taste of the cultures that are the origins of belly dance. After 11:00 p.m. at Plaka, you'll be dancing on the tables to the latest Arab pop hits, and after a few hours you may get to see some traditional Greek dancing on the napkin-covered floor. At Cafe Istanbul, you can join the Turkish waiters in a traditional line dance around the floor. And of course you'll learn to Debke at Nicola's... if you're lucky, there will be a cute Lebanese guy at the head of the line, twirling a napkin!
If you get the chance to perform with the student troupe, do it. I was in an invitation-based student troupe for several years, and it was hard work, but very rewarding. Participating in a more casual student troupe is a wonderful way to have the experience of performing, in a fairly low-pressure environment. You will get closer to your fellow students and can make strong friendships. You'll learn about costuming, makeup, and how to behave professionally and represent the art form. You'll get extra volunteer instruction time from your teacher, who is most likely taking some of her own free time to help with rehearsals (and don't forget to thank her for that!). And best of all, you get to perform in front of an audience -- which is not only a skill in itself, but also pretty much the point of the whole art form, right?

I could go on... but some things are obvious. Practice. Watch videos. Go to workshops. Explore music. Try other teachers. Above all, learn about the culture and the art form you are representing. Belly dance is so rich and full of things to learn, I can't imagine not being a student -- in one way or another -- for the rest of my life.

For starters, there's belly dancing by a variety of talented local performers every Friday and Saturday from 8:00 to 11:00. But you can also enjoy flamenco by several local troupes. Dancers from Calo Gitano Flamenco Academy perform on the first Sunday of every month. And beginning on October 7th, enjoy Aire Flamenco on the third Wednesday of every month. Aire Flamenco is accompanied by Jean Pierre Verbist; if you attended either of the shows during the Suhaila workshops a few weeks ago, you heard him play some amazing guitar with drummer Danny Stern!

Fanoos also offers live music. On Thursday, October 6th, jazz pianist William Green performs. And on Sunday, October 9th, enjoy Latin music with Ecuador's Willie Ziavino.

Saturday at 11:00, Halleyah's Conyers-based student troupe will perform at the annual Rockdale Master Gardeners Festival in Conyers.

Sunday at 1:30, Jahara Phoenix and Sherar will bring belly dance to Gwinnett County at the Duluth Fall Festival.

Kira's Open Stage Night has a new home -- Pera Dance on Collier Road -- and the inaugural event at Pera will take place this Saturday night. Open Stage Night is like open mic night, but for dancers. So if you're looking for performance opportunities, this could be just the thing! Entry fee is just $7.00, and doors open at 6:30.

This weekend's event is special -- it's called "Raqs Runway," and it's sponsored by Pera Dance Studio and MissBellydance.com. The evening will kick off with a fashion show featuring the latest from MissBellydance.com. Kira Lang of the Cross-Cultural Dance Company will perform, and Aya of Istanbul will not only perform, but also provide a taste of her new Saturday class at Pera with a mini-workshop in Turkish Rom belly dance! Plus all the open stage performers, of course. Wine and cheese will be available, but bring snacks of your own if you wish.

Nostalgia

Remember the 1340s? We were doing a dance called the Catapult.
You always wore brown, the color craze of the decade,
and I was draped in one of those capes that were popular,
the ones with unicorns and pomegranates in needlework.
Everyone would pause for beer and onions in the afternoon,
and at night we would play a game called “Find the Cow.”
Everything was hand-lettered then, not like today.

Where has the summer of 1572 gone? Brocade and sonnet
marathons were the rage. We used to dress up in the flags
of rival baronies and conquer one another in cold rooms of stone.
Out on the dance floor we were all doing the Struggle
while your sister practiced the Daphne all alone in her room.
We borrowed the jargon of farriers for our slang.
These days language seems transparent, a badly broken code.

The 1790s will never come again. Childhood was big.
People would take walks to the very tops of hills
and write down what they saw in their journals without speaking.
Our collars were high and our hats were extremely soft.
We would surprise each other with alphabets made of twigs.
It was a wonderful time to be alive, or even dead.

I am very fond of the period between 1815 and 1821.
Europe trembled while we sat still for our portraits.
And I would love to return to 1901 if only for a moment,
time enough to wind up a music box and do a few dance steps,
or shoot me back to 1922 or 1941, or at least let me
recapture the serenity of last month when we picked
berries and glided through afternoons in a canoe.

Even this morning would be an improvement over the present.
I was in the garden then, surrounded by the hum of bees
and the Latin names of flowers, watching the early light
flash off the slanted windows of the greenhouse
and silver the limbs on the rows of dark hemlocks.

As usual, I was thinking about the moments of the past,
letting my memory rush over them like water
rushing over the stones on the bottom of a stream.
I was even thinking a little about the future, that place
where people are doing a dance we cannot imagine,
a dance whose name we can only guess.

Suhaila is Coming, Ready or Not!

If there's one name that transcends all styles of bellydance as an authority on form, language, and the fine details of internalizing dance movements, it's Suhaila Salimpour. Nearly ever dancer, once he or she reaches a certain level, will run across Suhaila's terminology and technique in a class or a workshop. And in the Tribal world, Suhaila is pretty much belly dance royalty.

Now Suhaila is coming to Atlanta! This coming weekend, Atlanta Fusion Belly Dance is sponsoring two days of workshops accompanied by two big evening events. Friday night, the weekend kicks off with a "Cabaret Meets Tribal Fusion Extravaganza," featuring a fashion show, performances by top talent, live music, and a welcome hafla. Saturday night's Gala Show will feature Suhaila, AFBD's Rafi'ah Dance Company, and many more performers from metro Atlanta and beyond. Even if you can't make the workshops, I'd strongly recommend checking out this show!

Suhaila will be teaching four workshops, and I am personally looking forward to packing my brain and body with new information. I do expect the workshops to be challenging and strenuous; with my fitness and endurance levels not being that great at the moment, I plan to pace myself; if I need to take a break, I'll learn by watching. And I'll definitely do some "window-shopping" with the great vendors who will be offering their wares during breaks!

On a personal note...

It's been fun (and challenging) meeting my blog's original promise of keeping the metro Atlanta belly dance community informed about all the events coming up in the area and breaking down barriers among the various local "gangs." I'd still like to see the blog have a life beyond Facebook, but it's all good. I'd also love to see more people proactively sending me items to post, but that's been picking up as well. Meanwhile, I'm continuing to comb the events I see on Facebook and on the web sites of various local instructors, performers, troupes, and show producers (when they're kept up to date, hint hint) and capturing everything on the calendar. Blogging is surprisingly time-consuming, but the feedback I've gotten from many members of the community has been really rewarding.

I'd like to start adding more personal content to make the blog more than just an event listing resource. I'm not in a position to review shows (though of course I have opinions). There are other writers out there (particularly Dahne of Belly Dance Examiner) publishing interviews with local teachers and performers. But I think I may share more about my personal journey. I think each of us has an interesting and unique story of how we got involved in this art form, what we enjoy about it, what we find frustrating, and above all what keeps us interested and motivated. If there's anything I've learned, one's own belly dance journey is likely to be marked by constant change and evolution. New teachers will always be coming along to build on, enrich, and sometimes correct things you've already learned. We're always discovering new performers to watch and admire (I know most of us are familiar with the term "my new girl crush"). Changes in our lives outside of dance interact in interesting ways with our dance lives. I'd like to start sharing more of my personal journey, and I hope I'll find even more connections with others in the community who have shared some of the same experiences!

New Studio Opening in Alpharetta

Exciting news! There's a new studio in the northern suburbs, Amoora Dance & Fitness. Operated by Susu Ali (who has been teaching at Pera Dance), Amoora offers classes in yoga, Pilates, Zumba, kickboxing, and Bollywood dance -- in addition to belly dance, of course!

Amoora is located at 214 South Main Street in Alpharetta. So far they don't have a web site, but they do have a Facebook page... check it out! There's an open house scheduled for this Saturday, September 3 -- if you're not going to Dragon*Con or the Mahmoud Reda workshop, you might want to stop by and hear about Susu's plans for the studio!

Workshops & Hafla at Sulukele in Athens This Saturday!

This Saturday, August 27th, Sulukele & Christy Fricks Bellydance will be offering two unique workshops at Floorspace Studios in Athens, followed by a hafla with performances, food, and general merriment!

From 1:00 to 2:30, Rajni will teach a workshop introducing the Tribal Odyssey Egyptian group improv format. Tribal Odyssey Belly Dance (TOBD) is a style developed by Kawakib of Fredericksburg, VA in collaboration with Miramar of Winchester, VA. It uses natural posture and both sides of the body in combinations based primarily on Egyptian beledi-style movement. Flexible formations allow any number of dancers to participate.

From 3:00 to 4:30, Christy will teach "Turkish Spoons for Dancers, Musicians, and Everybody Else!" She'll review the history of Turkish spoons, how to play them, basic rhythms and some basic dance moves. By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to dance and play along to a traditional Turkish song!

At 6:30 p.m., the hafla starts! Bring a $3-5 donation and a dish or beverage to share.

New Bollywood Class with Sanam in Marietta

If you want to learn more about Bollywood-style dance from a lifelong student of contemporary South Asian and Middle Easter belly dance, now's your chance! Sanam will be teaching a new eight-week Bollywood technique class starting Tuesday, September 6 at Peachtree Gymnastics & More in Marietta. Classes are from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.

This is an all-level class designed to provide an introduction to the basic steps, movements, and combinations that make up Bollywood dance. You can expect fabulous music, a fun atmosphere, and a lot of energy!

New Classes with Ziah in Avondale Estates

Starting this Wednesday, August 17th, Ziah of Awalim will be teaching new classes at Metro Dance Company Studio in Avondale Estates! This brand-new studio is located near the James Joyce Pub at 2864 Franklin Street.

Ziah will be teaching two classes every Wednesday night:

7:00 - 8:00 p.m. it's Basic Technique -- technique and language skills for any style of belly dance.

"Najm al Raqs" Brings Nath Keo Back in October!

One of the highlights of the show I saw at Black Orchid Dance's "Najm al Danse Orientale" this past May was Cambodian-Canadian dancer Nath Keo. Nath's two solos -- an amazing hip-hop fusion piece that included touches of classical Cambodian dance, as well as a more traditional Oriental set -- were really amazing. And from what I've heard, he is a fabulous teacher as well, and just as funny in a workshop as he was when he took over the MC'ing duties for a few minutes.

Meanwhile, missing from the May event due to travel issues was Brazil's Hayat el Helwa. But fear not... Black Orchid Dance is bringing both Nath Keo and Hayat el Helwa back to Georgia for "Najm al Raqs - a Belly Dance Affair," October 14-16 at Dolce Atlanta Peachtree in Peachtree City, just south of Atlanta. This weekend-long event features workshops with the two instructors, as well as several gala shows and parties.

New Classes with Lacy Perry!

Most members of the metro Atlanta belly dance community know ebullient redhead Lacy Perry, as the owner of Beledi Boutique or through her performances with Sherar. And you may have noticed more solo performances from Lacy in the past year or so -- she has become a skilled performer in her own right!

The latest evolution in Lacy's dance career? Classes! Lacy is now teaching technique and choreography classes in the Johns Creek/Alpharetta area, and a new six-week session starts Tuesday, August 16. From 7:30 to 8:30 on Tuesdays, Lacy's Drills & Skills class will help dancers of any level build their Tribal technique and polish the movements included in the choreography class that begins at 8:30. In this class, Lacy will teach original Tribal fusion choreographies in a variety of styles.

The first six-week session will be focused on Lacy's original choreography "The Devil in the White City," which wowed the audience at Tribal Delight in Hampton Roads, VA this March. "Lacy Perry graced the stage with an emotive theatrical fusion piece which narrated the story of three victims who were either murdered by H.H. Holmes or related to the Holmes murders that occurred during the time of the World's Fair. Through an analysis of characters in Eric Larson's 'The Devil the White City', Lacy created three distinct characters in her riveting montage performed to a compilation of three songs, 'The Bird Girl' and 'French Postcards', both by Circus Contraption, and 'Velvet Revolution' by Tori Amos. Portraying characters with poignant stories, Lacy's first vignette interpreted the longing and sorrow felt by victim Carrie Pietzel whose husband and children were murdered in a most heinous manner. The second character Lacy brought to life was Emeline Cigrand, a 'starry-eyed young woman' who was pregnant with Holmes's chald, dosed with chloroform, then locked in a vault to suffocate. Lacy's third portrayal was a composite characterization of Holmes's female victims from his objectifying perspective. Lacy specifically chose 'Velvet Revolution' which includes the phrases, 'killers of the children' and violating a 'new commandment' so that she could interpret the lyrics through her dance 'as a condemnation of Holmes to the hell of never-ending vengeance by the women he murdered.' Lacy brought it all from fluid moves to social justice."

Registration is now open for TribalCon VIII, February 23-26, 2012! Early bird registration discounts continue through the end of September. Save some money and sign up early for what promises to be an amazing weekend of dance and music workshops, two amazing shows, and at least two incredible parties! This year's theme is "Foundations" -- the instructors will be sharing the skills that make them well-rounded performers.

The list of teachers for 2012 is quite impressive! The dance track includes Tamalyn Dallal, Megha Gavin (with two ATS workshops, yay!), Ariellah, our own Ziah Ali, and the incomparable Zoe Jakes. The music track will include Al Cofrin, Dave Machek, August Hoerr of the Mezmer Society, and the legendary Faisal Zadan. Zoe and Faisal will be teaming up to teach drum solo concepts, with both a lecture and a dance session... you know where I'll be Saturday afternoon!

Wanted to let everyone know that the one and only Aziza Nawal will be subbing for Teejei's Tuesday night Discover Tribal Bellydance choreography class at Dance 101 August 2nd and 9th at 8:00 (and for her Monday night 7:00 technique class on the 8th). What makes this news, you might ask? Well, two things...

Pretty exciting news -- Teejei is now a member of Brizeus, a group of pipers, drummers, and string players based all over the USA performing Celtic, historic European, and original folk dance music at outdoor festivals. Teejei has been adding to her considerable dance talents by developing her drumming skills... and for the next few weeks, she'll be performing with Brizeus at Pennsic, a huge Society for Creative Anachronism event in Pennsylvania.

So...

Teejei's Awalim Dance Company troupemate Aziza Nawal will be teaching Teejei's classes! I am personally excited about this because though I've admired her for years and been in classes and workshops with her, I've never studied with Aziza before. Following the format Teejei has established, on Tuesdays at 8:00 she will be teaching a section of one of her choreographies on Tuesdays; on Monday night at 7:00, she will focus on the technique for some of the moves in the choreography. Mark your calendars for "ATS: From the Earth to the Moon," an awesome American Tribal Style belly dance workshop with Teejei of Awalim, Saturday July 23rd from 1:00 to 3:00 at Dance & Arts Showcase near Northlake Mall.

This will be an all-levels technique and improvisation workshop. Experience ATS for the first time, or get a tune-up if (like me) you're rusty! There won't be anything too advanced; just some good quality time in a dance-and-troubleshoot format. Wear what you like and please bring your zills.

Teejei is certified in the FatChanceBellydance format, so the technique is high-caliber and straight from the source. And to top it all off, your attendance will help fund Teejei's journey to Middle Eastern jam band heaven -- Pennsic! A portion of the proceeds will also benefit the Cheb I Sabbah Cancer Treatment Fund.

In the second installation of a new music series pairing Atlanta bands with Atlanta dancers, the lovely ladies of Jahara Phoenix will be performing with the 4th Ward Afro Klezmer Orchestra tonight, Friday July 15.

The "4WAKO" is a nine-piece band that (according to Doug DeLoach of Stomp & Stammer), "...carve soulfunk grooves remiscent of Fela Kuti's Africa 70's and rock the bar mitzvah like there's no Second Coming."

In case you haven't heard, the legendary dancer and choreographer Mahmoud Reda will be back in Atlanta this September for workshops and a gala show. Amani Jabril sponsored two days of workshops and an amazing show last year, and she has booked Mr. Reda again for Labor Day weekend (September 3-4)!

From now until July 31, Amani is offering a great deal! A full weekend pass, including workshops on Saturday and Sunday as well as the Saturday night show, is just $175. I was at last year's Saturday workshop, and though it was one of the most challenging things I have ever done (there is a lot of intricate footwork, which is always difficult for me without detailed breakdowns), I am so grateful that I was able to study with this living legend. Though his explanations were not always easy to follow, he was surrounded by professional dancers who immediately (amazingly, to me) interpreted his movements into graceful folkloric combinations. Saturday night's show included amazing talent from throughout the Southeast, including several Reda choreographies that are seldom seen live. Personally, I am an absolute nut for folkloric dance in general and the ballet-infused Reda style in particular, so I was in heaven!

Teejei Expands Classes at Dance 101

In the "shameless plug for my own tribe" category (though it also fits the "classes you should seriously consider attending because they are awesome" category), here's some hot news from Teejei of Awalim! In addition to her Monday night Tribal technique classes at 7:00, Teejei will be teaching a new choreography class at Dance 101 on Tuesdays at 8:00, starting July 5.

This class will feature an ATS-inspired choreography that includes lots of basic ATS moves and technique, plus a touch of Teejei's unique fusion style. Dance 101 is a beautiful all-adult studio where students are surrounded by dance and music of all styles. I love going to classes there and really feeling like a part of the larger world of dance! They often run class card specials that make the cost of a class around $11, which is a great deal.

Yes, it's another weekend with lots of belly dance activities to choose from here in Atlanta! Now we can add some breaking news about a great way to cap off a day of dance -- Aya's birthday party at Taverna Plaka!

So here's a quick rundown of this Saturday's events:

Majda of Awalim

2:00 - 4:00 at Atlanta Fusion Belly Dance is the second in the Awalim Dance Company series of Foundation Revelations workshops. This one is all about using your body more efficiently for better endurance -- tips and drills that will help any dancer. Only $35 at the door or $30 in advance here!

At 7:00, it's the Bellydance Troupe Appreciation show at the Art Place Mountain View in Marietta. The more I hear about this show, the more I'm looking forward to attending! I expect a great mix of performances from troupes based in Atlanta and throughout the Southeast.

Also going on Saturday evening at 7:30 in Bishop, GA (near Athens) is the Kangari Tribal Dance Company student recital at the Portico. Kangari is led by my Banat Almeh troupemate Natakiya, whose generous and creative spirit flows in many directions and touches many people.

Well, the hooves represent the deer’s hooves,

the red scarf represents the flowers from which he ate,

the shawl is for skin.

The cocoons make the sound of the deer walking on leaves and grass.

It’s a gourd drum. The drum represents the heartbeat of the deer.

He just knows. His mother said he had dreams when he was just a little boy.

You know how that happens. He just had it in him.

Then he started working with older men who taught him how to dance.

He has made many sacrifices for his dancing even for just a young boy.

The people concur, “Yes, you can see it in his face.”

Question: What do they do with the money we throw them?

Oh, they just split it among the singers and dancer.

They will probably take the boy to McDonald’s for a burger and fries.

The men will probably have a cold one.

Yes, this Sunday night the student show at Nicola's will have some stiff competition from our sisters in Lawrenceville (in fact, if I wasn't performing I'd probably be there)! Sherar, the student troupe of Jahara Phoenix, presents the 2nd annual "Spark of Hope" benefit show at Messina's Mediterranean Cuisine.

This year's performance will be a fundraiser for Indonesian Culture Exploration, a charitable organization taking action to save the rainforests. Along with the members of Sherar, performers will include Jahara Phoenix Dance Company, Jendayi Belly Dance Company, Rafi'ah Dance Company, & Oleandra.

Don't miss the semi-annual Student Showcase at Nicola's Lebanese Restaurant this Sunday, June 16, featuring performances from Awalim student troupe Banat Almeh (including moi), Majda Anwar's Georgia Tech students (you might be surprised at how well those engineers and scientists can dance), and Aziza Nawal's equally fabulous students. All of these teachers are known for preparing their students very well so they can deliver professional-quality performances!

Oh, and of course there will be performances by the Awalim Dance Company... making this much more than a student show! Atlanta Streets Alive -- This Saturday!

The second annual Atlanta Streets Alive festival will take place in downtown Atlanta this Saturday -- and yes, there will be belly dancers there (including yours truly), along with other dance, music, and fitness stuff! Starting at 10:30 in Woodruff Park, the goal of Streets Alive is to open our city's streets for people to play, walk, bike, breathe, and make their own.

Dance events at this year's festival will include performances and casual, fun lessons with Awalim Dance Company and student troupe Banat Almeh. That means I'll be down there in full costume from 11:00 to 1:00! Awalim and Banat Almeh will be at Hurt Park, which is on Edgewood Avenue, between Peachtree Center and Courtland Street. We've been promised a shady spot!

This Weekend's Belly Dance Events

Aziza & Inara at Taverna Plaka

This weekend will be fairly quiet... allowing the community to take a few deep breaths between Black Orchid and all the things that are going on next weekend! But there are a few performances to check out.

Inara will be a very busy lady this weekend! Saturday night, she'll be wowing the crowd at Taverna Plaka with Aziza Nawal. Taverna Plaka is still one of the most fun venues in Atlanta -- great Greek food, a fun mix of music, and later in the night the napkins start flying and everyone starts dancing on the tables! Aziza will be at Plaka Friday night as well.

Inara is one of Atlanta's most philanthropic dancers, and on Sunday, June 5, she and her Hip Chics troupe will be performing at CAN Dance for Cancer at the Defoor Center. June 5 is National Cancer Survivors' Day, and this is a community dance event intended to unite the Atlanta dance community while raising funds for the American Cancer Society, as well as for a local family in need. Performances will begin at 4:30.

Jahara Phoenix

Also happening this Saturday night... members of Jahara Phoenix will be performing at Messina's Mediterranean Cuisine. The first Saturday of every month is Bellydance Night at Messina's. Najm al Danse Orientale is Happening Now!

I am very late in mentioning a big event going on this weekend -- "Najm al Danse Orientale," presented by Black Orchid Dance. It's a whole weekend of workshops, shows, contests, parties, shopping for sparkly or fringy stuff... all the things belly dancers love, right? And it really is packed with stars, including Tito Seif, Sharon Kihara, Tarik Sultan, Willow Chang, and more. I have missed this event in the past due to scheduling conflicts, but this year I will at least be attending the Sunday night show! I'm looking forward to the performances by all these awesome guests, as well as lots of local talent. Nothing like just settling in for a heapin' helpin' of belly dance, is there? And I am particularly looking forward to finally seeing this Tito dude everyone's always raving about!

Anyway, I expect to see lots of friends from all corners of the community Sunday night -- that's the other part of belly dance that we all love, right? The best part, I'd argue. Hope to see you there!

Experience the Magic of Live Music, July 16th!

There's no disputing the fact that live music makes dance more exciting... whether you're watching a performance with a live band or dancing socially to live music at a hafla. The interactions between the musicians and the performers, the air of spontaneity, and the possibility that something unexpected can happen at any moment -- all of these factors make the experience that much more interesting and entertaining.

Many cities are fortunate to have thriving communities of musicians who specialize in Middle Eastern, Balkan, Central European, Romany, Indian, and other music that lends itself to various forms of Oriental dance. Surprisingly, Atlanta is not really one of those places.

However, we are fortunate to have a passionate enthusiast and expert on Middle Eastern music in the person of Majda Anwar. In addition to her considerable talents as a performer, Majda is pretty much on a personal mission to bring more live music to the stages, classrooms, and haflas of metro Atlanta. On July 16th at the Red Light Cafe, Majda and Awalim will be presenting a truly unique evening of performances, with live music accompaniment from beginning to end -- a TribalCarnivale Extraordinaire!

The evening will kick off at 9:00 with Wasted Wine from Greenville, SC. This two-man ensemble, described by one newspaper as "the lovechild of Tom Waits and the Decemberists," will accompany several dance performances. You may have seen them in last year's Halloween show.

Then the Day Late & Dollar Shortkestra will take the stage! This collective, loosely based in Columbia, SC (I believe), meets up wherever they can to play amazing music together. Featuring Natalie Brown, Glenn Weinstein, and the great Darbuka Dave along with Majda herself, the Shortkestra will be playing all sorts of music to accompany some of the area's most accomplished performers. At the moment, the lineup includes Awalim, Jahara Phoenix, Kira Lang, Melanie Parker, Zaina Zahra, and Banat Almeh -- along with Natalie Brown of Delirium Tribal, who will put her flute down long enough to dance.

Can these movements which move themselves

be the substance of my attraction?

Where does this thin green silk come from that covers my body?

Surely any woman wearing such fabrics

would move her body just to feel them touching every part of her.

Yet most of the women frown, or look away, or laugh stiffly.

They are afraid of these materials and these movements

in some way.

The psychologists would say they are afraid of themselves, somehow.

Perhaps awakening too much desire—

that their men could never satisfy?

So they keep themselves laced and buttoned and made up

in hopes that the framework will keep them stiff enough not to feel

the whole register.

In hopes that they will not have to experience that unquenchable

desire for rhythm and contact.

If a snake glided across this floor

most of them would faint or shrink away.

Yet that movement could be their own.

That smooth movement frightens them—

awakening ancestors and relatives to the tips of the arms and toes.

So my bare feet

and my thin green silks

my bells and finger cymbals

offend them—frighten their old-young bodies.

While the men simper and leer—

glad for the vicarious experience and exercise.

They do not realize how I scorn them;

or how I dance for their frightened,

unawakened, sweet

women.

This Weekend's Belly Dance Action!

Once again, the metro Atlanta belly dance world is full of things to see and do this weekend!

Saturday night, Taloolah Love presents "Arabian Nights" at Bart Webb Studios in Avondale Estates. Now a star in the burlesque world, you may or may not know that Taloolah got her start as a belly dancer! This event will feature fun belly dance workshops with the one and only Christy Anandaconda and a fabulous hookah lounge designed by Banat Almeh's own Monet Fort! Sunday night, there are three events to choose from!

Zills & Maqamat with Awalim in Athens

I've already blogged about these workshops, of course -- and I'll be pointing my Subaru in the direction of Athens Saturday morning to do lots of zill-playing with Ziah (which I love -- I was a percussionist in high school, and I actually remember playing finger cymbals to an exotic piece by Vaclav Nelhybel) and learning about the subtleties of Middle Eastern music with Majda. I've had kind of an Athens fetish since my art school days in the 80's, so I am excited about the road trip.

Mad Hatters' Hafla & Open Stage Night at Dune Lounge

Brought to you by the venerable Kira, this is a new concept in haflas. For a $5 entry fee, you can perform -- not unlike an open mic night, but for belly dancers! You'll also get a video recording of your performance, I believe. There will be drumming and dancing all night, with a drum circle starting at 10:00. Oh, and I think you're expected to wear a hat! Jahara Phoenix at Collaborations Atlanta

This is another new performance event that may become an ongoing series. Jahara Phoenix will bring their finesse, creativity and sass to The Beam on Glenwood Avenue, as artists, poets, musicians, and dancers present collaborative performances. Aya at Nicola's

Every weekend night at Nicola's is a party, and a chance to see Aya perform is a real treat. If you know me, you know that Aya was my teacher for several years and I was a member of her troupe, Ayaat. She is a graceful performer and a truly warm, gracious restaurant dancer who connects with every member of the audience.

I have been very flattered a few times to hear people use the word "graceful" when complimenting me on a performance, and I believe I owe much of that to Aya and her uniquely flowing style of dance. If you haven't seen Aya perform recently, this Saturday is your chance!

The Empty Dance Shoes

An empty pair of dance shoes
Will sit on the floor like a wart
Until it is given a reason to move.

Those of us who study inertia
(Those of us covered with wild hair and sleep)
Can state this without fear:
The energy in a pair of shoes at rest
Is about the same as that of a clown

Knocked flat by a sandbag.
This you can tell your friends with certainty:
A clown, flat on his back,
Is a lot like an empty pair of
    dancing shoes.

An empty pair of dancing shoes
Is also a lot like a leaf
Pressed in a book.

Deepen Your Musical Knowledge with Awalim

This coming Saturday at Floorspace Studios in Athens, Ziah and Majda of Awalim Dance Company will be offering dancers and musicians a unique opportunity to really dig into the details of Middle Eastern music with two unique workshops, hosted by Sulukele and Christy Fricks Bellydance. I'll be making a road trip to experience these workshops, finally check out this studio, and make some new friends among the Athens belly dance community!

From noon until 2:00, Ziah will teach a zill intensive. Over the years, I've seen many dancers struggle to get more comfortable with playing zills. Adding another layer of movement and rhythm can be challenging, especially for dancers who have not played an instrument in the past. And sometimes, playing along with the rhythms of non-Western music can be difficult. Ziah has developed a great set of zill drills that will help dancers improve their comfort and skill level -- and provide teachers with content they can add to their classes. Ziah will also be laying the foundation for the next workshop session by sharing her extensive knowledge of Middle Eastern music with tips on the zill patterns and accents that best accompany various traditional rhythms. This workshop is a prerequisite for the next one, at 2:30...

...which will be "Emoting to Middle Eastern Music through Dance: An Exploration of the Maqamat," taught by Majda. Many dancers have learned the basics of Middle Eastern rhythms and can name a beledi, masmoudi, zeffa... but this music also has an intricate system of tonal modes as well, known as Maqamat -- and each is designed to convey specific emotions. The dancer's job, of course, is to bring these emotions to life for the audience -- resulting, ideally, in a state of "Tarab," or enchantment (learn more about Tarab here). North Georgia is fortunate to have an expert in Middle Eastern music in Majda, and she will discuss the various modes and how best to intepret them through movement.

Praise of the Dance

I praise the dance, for it frees people from the heaviness of matter and binds the isolated to community.

I praise the dance, which demands everything: health and a clear spirit and a buoyant soul.

Dance is a transformation of space, of time, of people, who are in constant danger of becoming all brain, will, or feeling.

Dancing demands a whole person, one who is firmly anchored in the center of his life, who is not obsessed by lust for people and things and the demon of isolation in his own ego.

Dancing demands a freed person, one who vibrates with the equipoise of all his powers.

I praise the dance.

O man, learn to dance, or else the angels in heaven will not know what to do with you.

Two Chances to See Jahara Phoenix This Saturday (May 7th)!

Jahara Phoenix, the fabulous tribal fusion and theatrical troupe headquarted in Lawrenceville, will be very busy this Saturday!

The troupe will take the main stage at Duluth's "Barefoot in the Park" Arts Festival on the Duluth town green from 12:45 to 1:15. Then in the evening, Jahara Phoenix members Oracle and CA will be performing at Messina's Mediterannean Cuisine in Lilburn from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Around noon in the Central Park area at Atlantic Station (take the 17th Street exit off 75/85 in Midtown)
Come and see over 40 Atlanta-area dancers in a "spontaneous" flash mob-style performance! Relearning How to Walk with Awalim

On Saturday, April 30th, Awalim will be conducting the first in a series of three workshops at Atlanta Fusion Belly Dance. From 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., you can learn how to walk.

But wait, you might say... I learned how to walk when I was still in diapers!

And you probably spent your very first belly dance class just walking around the room, so you know how to walk as a belly dancer, too -- right? But how many movements can you do with one foot completely off the floor? Not so easy, right?

Well, I don't want to toot the horns of my own teachers too much on my blog, but hey -- it's my blog. One of the most valuable things I've learned through my studies with Awalim is how to walk -- or, more specifically, how to travel in a way that gives freedom to your feet, legs, and hips. I was surprised to learn how "chained" I was -- relying on the floor to drive a lot of my movement. But if you're not chained to the floor, it's so much easier to use the rest of your body to layer other movements on top of your traveling steps. Simple concept, but you have to learn it and drill it with someone who knows how to do it right (and it takes a lot of work). That's where Awalim and this workshop come in. You should sign up. Students will be challenged with new concepts of posture and body mechanics to execute belly dance movements with more ease while traveling. You’d be surprised as to what you couldn’t do before after examining these concepts:

The mechanics of your feet and walking
Chained and unchained movement
Weighted and unweighted movement
Detaching hip movement from legs
Differences in body types
Which muscle groups create what movement

P.S. As you may have guessed by now, the secret to this has a lot to do with your thigh muscles. Expect your quads to be sore on May Day!

Call of the Drums

In the clear indigo sky
tiny thrumming suns burn,
the living celestial guides
of bedouins long dead.

My feet beat their path,
a road winding like silk ribbon.
Behind me, a trail of travelers’ gifts
to goddesses long dead.

The stars seem to wink,
reminding me to divine truth
by hearing without ears, the sighs
of passions long dead.

Beats buzz along my flesh,
like warm fingers fluttering
across the tight-strung skin
of animals long dead.

Drums hold sway over the night,
vibrating the crisp air,
living out the rhythms
of drummers long dead.

They pound in my heart,
my soul. My hips, my limbs
flow in a serpentine dance
of priestesses long dead.

I am a vessel, possessed
by music taking physical form.
Weaving through its timeless world,
I am unmistakably alive.

Courtesy of the RaqsAtlanta Yahoo! group (which I highly recommend you join)... second Saturdays are now "Open Stage Night" at Dune Lounge in Marietta! This will be like open mic night... but for dancers. It's brought to you by Kira -- see her web site for more info.

The first event will be the "Mad Hatters Hafla," Saturday, May 14 at 7:00 p.m. Entry fee is only $5.00. There will be a sign-up sheet at the door for those who want to take the stage. In addition to the "open stage" performances, there will be drumming and dancing throughout the night, including a drum circle starting at 10:00.
